Here is a guide on how to create a Google Search Console account and add external users to it.
Step 1: Create a Google Search Console Account
Sign in with a Google account: You'll need a Google account (like a Gmail address) to use Search Console.1 If you don't have one, you can create one for free.2
Add a "Property": A "property" is the website or app that you want to manage in Search Console.3 There are two main ways to add a property:
Domain Property: This is the recommended method. It includes all subdomains and protocol prefixes (e.g., http://, https://, www, and non-www).4 To verify ownership, you'll need to add a DNS record to your domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap).5 Google will provide the specific record to add.
- URL Prefix Property: This method is for a specific URL prefix only (e.g.,
https://www.yourdomain.com). You will need to create a separate property for each version of your site (e.g.,http://yourdomain.com,https://yourdomain.com). You can verify ownership using several methods, including:Uploading an HTML file to your website's root directory.6
Adding an HTML meta tag to the
<head>section of your website's homepage.7Using your Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager account (if you're using the same Google account for both).8
- Verify your ownership: Once you've chosen a method, follow the on-screen instructions to verify that you own the website. This is a crucial step that gives you access to all the data and tools in Search Console.
Step 2: Add External Users
Once you have a verified Search Console property, you can add other users to collaborate.9 You must be an "Owner" of the property to add or remove users.10
- Navigate to the "Users and permissions" section:
Log in to Google Search Console.11
- In the left-hand navigation menu, click on "Settings".
- Click on "Users and permissions".
- Add a new user:
- Click the "Add User" button.
Enter the email address of the person you want to add.12 Important: The email address must be a valid Google Account.13
- Choose a permission level: You can assign one of the following roles:
Owner: Has full control over the property.14 They can add and remove other users, change settings, and use all tools.15
Full: Has view access to all data and can perform some actions, like submitting sitemaps or URL inspection requests.16 They cannot, however, add or remove other users.17
Restricted: Has limited, view-only access to most data.18 They cannot make any changes or perform actions.
Confirm the new user: Click "Add" to finalize the process.19 The new user will now be able to see the property in their own Search Console account when they log in.20 They do not receive an email notification about the access.21
